The first adidas adicolor shoe in 1983 was sold as a plain white Superstar with an accompanying set of acrylic paints and a wooden mixing pallet. The idea was for the wearer to self-customize the ‘blank canvas’ into a walking work-of-art, but the adicolor did not catch on until its relaunch in 2005 as the adicolor ‘color’ range. The self-expression intended by the adicolor was replaced with creative releases of the shoe designed by professional artists, designers, and musicians.
